Whether you’re a mature collector or new to the game, when looking to buy gold bullion coins, the American Gold Eagle coin is by far one of the top leaders worldwide Produced from gold mined in the United States, this coin accounts for over 80% of the gold bullion coins purchased in American alone. Being that it is the official gold bullion coin of the United States probably helps that ratio a bit. But beyond that, this coin is available in a variety of weights, making it a tangible option for any budget.
Authorized under the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985, the American Gold Eagle was first released by the United States Mint in 1986. The act, signed by Ronald Reagan, explicitly stated that all gold used in minting the American Eagle would from “newly mined domestic sources.” An appealing feature to many gold collectors. Further, each coin is imprinted with their gold content and legal tender face value.
Engraved with the country’s symbolic bald eagle, the American Gold Eagle comes in a variety of weights. Offered in 1/10 oz, ¼ oz, ½ oz, and 1 oz denominations, these coins are guaranteed by the U.S. government to contain the stated amount of actual gold. However, silver and copper are also used to produce a more wear-resistant coin.
The 22k gold coin is referred to as “crown gold” because of the English standard. However, crown gold alloys had not been used since 1834 due to the drop in standard. When the standard increased to .9167, the American Gold Coin was then authorized for production.
The market value of the coins is typically equal, or close to, the value of the gold content. However, if you’re looking to buy gold bullion coins, the actual selling price varies based on the current price of gold.
